Khawar Ali

Introducing Khawar Ali, Conservative Candidate For Meir North & Broadway.

Local Conservatives have annouced that Khawar Ali as candidate for the Meir North and Broadway by-election, which will take place on Thursday 2nd May.

The by-election was called following the resignation of veteran Labour Councillor Desiree Elliott, who was also a Cabinet Member on Stoke-on-Trent City Council. No reason has been given for the resignation, but it is believed that a disagreement within the Labour Group led to the resignation. Desiree Elliott was elected during the 2023 Local Elections.

Conservative Group Leader, Councillor Daniel Jellyman said

"A senior Labour Councillor and Cabinet Member has resigned less than a year into the current term, with no reasoning provided by the Labour Group. This is another example of Labour's lack of stable leadership and comes after months of poor decision making ahead of the budget in February. Labour are in a mess. They are unable to take the tough decisions needed to put the council finances on a stable footing, they're unable to provide any plans for using Levelling Up funding allocated to the city and they're unable to function as a group. This by-election will cost tax payers around £8,000 and is happening because the Labour Group is falling apart."

"The £8,000 is on top of the Leader of the Council expanding her cabinet, costing local tax payers over £156,000 a year just to line Labour Councillors pockets with some extra cash."

Khawar Ali said

"I'm pleased to be announced as the Conservative candidate for Meir North and Broadway. It's an area I know really well which has been let down by former Labour representatives. If elected, I will work tirelessly to bring positive change to the local area, to listen to residents and act on their priorities and to ensure that the ward has a strong voice on the City Council."

"Please lend me your vote on 2nd May."

The by-election will take place on Thursday 2nd May 2024. Please remember to take ID with you when you go to vote. ID accepted includes passports, driving license, bus passes for those over 25 and armed forces ID cards.
